But in case you're curious, here's how we met: In February of 1997, I placed a free personal ad in the New York Press. This is what it looked like:
Charles was on a conference call with friends, trying to figure out what movie to go to, when one of them said "Hey, Charles, here's a personal ad for you." and read mine over the phone to him. The next day he called to respond to the ad, but got a phone call in the middle of leaving a voicemail message for me. He decided to call back and leave another one. I noticed that he was the only one who left me an e-mail address, so I wrote him an e-mail. He wrote back and we traded urls. At that point we made a date to meet and go gallery-hopping on February 15, at 2pm. The night before, I was out quite late with friends, and ended up getting a tattoo that I had been planning to get for some time...it just seemed like the right night. The tattoo was on the back of my neck and looked like this:
Ten hours later, I met Charles in front of Dean&Deluca's. He asked what I did the night before and I showed him my new tattoo. Since he didn't seem too taken aback, we went to a few galleries, had hot chocolate, walked some more, had tea, and ended up talking for hours. We split up for dinner, but then met later at the Bank for drinks and dancing. We couldn't seem to get together again for a few weeks, but once we did, we started spending a great deal of time together. The rest is all bananas and peanut butter.
